The International Olympic Committee announced yesterday that climbing will not be included in the 2020 Olympics.
For the sport of climbing, I personally think this is good news in the longterm considering the already rapidly increasing access issues, area closures and general environmental impact. A large portion of climbing areas in the world can’t support a much greater number of visitors, especially areas located close to big cities which see the highest traffic. Not to mention the further commercialization of our sport that would have ensued by parties with no regard for the negative effects.
For the sport of plastic climbing it’s not the news many were hoping for. While I think it would be great to have climbing as an Olympic sport, I think the possible negative effects of it outweigh it’s benefits. Regardless, climbing will continue it’s steady growth at a more predictable pace.
On top of all that, the proposed format of only having an overall title for all three disciplines; speed, lead and bouldering combined, was maybe the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard in a while. Why not just make a combined title for giant slalom, halfpipe and ski jumping? They’re all the same sport right? Sliding down a snowy hill, what’s the difference?

It’s almost June and it’s snowing for the third day in a row!? And we were worried about it being too warm by now! Not much else to do so went for a run up in the mountains. Come on weather! I can’t wait to get back on the projects!!! (at Verbier)
We went to Branson yesterday and I got to climb the classic Radja, worlds first proposed 8B+ and La Danse les Balrogs, worlds first proposed 8B along with some other problems! Inpiring to see what Fred Nicole was climbing back in 1991! #bouldering #rockclimbing #island
